5,6-Dichloro-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-amine (5,6-DCI) is a heterocyclic compound that has antiviral activity. It is an alkenyl benzimidazole derivative and has been shown to be active against the influenza virus in mice. 5,6-DCI also inhibits the growth of other viruses such as herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV1 and HSV2), vaccinia, encephalomyocarditis (EMC), Newcastle disease virus (NDV), and bovine viral diarrhea virus. This drug can be used for the treatment of viral infections in humans.
5,6-DCI binds to the RNA polymerase of the virus and prevents it from synthesizing RNA. In this way 5,6-DCI inhibits replication of the virus by inhibiting protein synthesis.
