p-(Dimethylamino)benzenesulfonic acid is a stabilized azetidine that is a heteroatom analog of the β-lactam antibiotic class. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds and has been shown to have antibacterial properties. p-(Dimethylamino)benzenesulfonic acid inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Azetidines are chemically reactive and undergo reductive cleavage or cyclization under physiological conditions, which may lead to toxicity. The chemical stability of p-(Dimethylamino)benzenesulfonic acid makes it a useful intermediate in organic chemistry.
