Product Information
2,2-Diphenylcyclopropanecarbonitrile (DPC) is a condensation product of ethylcyanoacetate and benzophenone. It is a white solid that is soluble in most organic solvents. DPC can be prepared by the condensation of ethylcyanoacetate and benzophenone in the presence of a base catalyst such as sodium hydroxide or potassium carbonate. The reaction proceeds via the elimination of water to yield an imidazole derivative. Acid hydrolysis followed by cyclopropanation with ethylene yields the desired product. This compound has been found to have significant antimicrobial activity against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It also inhibits DNA synthesis in cells, which may be due to its ability to form covalent bonds with nucleic acids, including RNA, DNA, and proteins. Analogs of DPC are known to inhibit protein
