2,5-Dithiophen-2-yl-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DTTS) is an organic semiconductor that has potential applications in polymer solar cells. The polymerization of DTTS can be achieved through a number of methods including thermal evaporation or solution-based processing. This polymerization produces a low molecular weight material with an interchain distance of approximately 2.5 Å and a redox potential approximately 0.5 V more positive than that of the parent compound. The photovoltaic properties of DTTS have been studied by systematically varying the methyl ester substituent at the para position and determining the effect on the carrier transport, kinetic stability, and optical absorption spectra. These studies show that when this substituent is methylated, DTTS has increased photovoltaic efficiency due to a reduced electron transport rate between chains and improved charge transfer kinetics.
