Diethyl 2-hydroxymalonate is a divalent mesoxalic acid that is soluble in water and alkali metal solutions. It reacts with ethylmalonic acid to form diethyl malonate. The residue from this reaction can be treated with sodium hydroxide to form sodium diethyl malonate, which can be used in the production of polyacrylates. Polyacrylates are monomers that have the ability to react with other molecules to form polymers that have surface properties, such as adhesiveness, toughness, and elasticity. Diethyl 2-hydroxymalonate has been shown to be analogous to acrylates in its reaction with other molecules.
