3,4-Dihydrobenz[cd]indol-5(1H)-one is an organometallic compound that is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. It is also used as a precursor to the synthesis of certain pesticides. 3,4-Dihydrobenz[cd]indol-5(1H)-one can be synthesized by an asymmetric Friedel-Crafts reaction between benzene and methylal chloride. The reaction produces enantiopure 3,4-dihydrobenz[cd]indol-5(1H)ones in high yield and purity. This reaction can also be carried out with alkyl chlorides or with dialkyl sulfates. The product may then be converted to desired products by ammonolysis, d-tryptophan, or diacid methods.
