Dimethyl(methylene)iminium chloride is a cationic quaternary ammonium compound. It is the chloride salt of dimethyl(methylene)iminium, which has a pyrazole ring and an amide group. This compound is used in the chlorination of inorganic acids to produce organic acids, such as acetic acid. Dimethyl(methylene)iminium chloride is also used as a reagent for the synthesis of cefpodoxime proxetil, an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Dimethyl(methylene)iminium chloride has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may be effective against bladder cancer and inflammatory diseases. It also has been shown to cause cancer and heart disease when administered at high doses.
