2,5-Dimethyl-2,5-di(2-ethylhexanoylperoxy)hexane (DHP) is a bifunctional monomer that has functional groups with both acid and ester functionality. DHP reacts with styrene to form polystyrene with a degree of polymerization of about 1100. Polystyrene is a thermoplastic polymer that can be used in the production of packaging materials, such as plastic bottles and cups. DHP is also an effective initiator for the synthesis of polyesters by reacting with dicarboxylic acids. The kinetic parameters for this reaction are dependent on temperature and chloride concentration.
