Disodium cetearyl sulfosuccinate is a non-polymeric, anionic surfactant that is used as a wetting agent and dispersant in pharmaceutical preparations. Disodium cetearyl sulfosuccinate has been found to be effective as a radiation-protective agent, and for this purpose it is often used in the manufacture of toothpaste and mouthwashes. It also has been shown to have antibacterial properties against carthamus tinctorius, which may be due to its ability to inhibit bacterial fatty acid synthesis. Disodium cetearyl sulfosuccinate is typically manufactured from unsaturated alkyl alcohols or polyols, such as sorbitol or sucrose. It has a molecular weight of about 600 and a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value of about 17.
