Product Information

Name:
3,5-Dibromo-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol
Description:

3,5-Dibromo-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (DBHA) is a synthetic molecule that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 4-hydroxybenzoic acid in the bacterial cell wall. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria at a ph optimum of 9.0 and is active against bromophenols and bromophenol-degrading enzymes. DBHA binds to the phenolic moiety on the outside of bacterial cell walls and disrupts their permeability. This leads to an increased osmotic pressure, which causes water to move into the cell and cause it to burst. DBHA also inhibits protein synthesis and can be used as a solvent for organic compounds with high melting points.
