Dichlormate is a diphenyl ether that has been used as an agrochemical. It is used to control weeds and other plant pests, and also to inhibit the growth of some fungi. Dichlormate inhibits the chloroplast function by binding with the carotenoid pigments that are necessary for photosynthesis. The resulting accumulation of fluorine ions in chloroplasts leads to their destruction. Dichlormate can also be used as a film-forming polymer for liquid chromatography. The diphenyl ether structure gives dichlormate its magnetic resonance spectral properties, which are characterized by two sets of peaks at 1.7 ppm and 3.8 ppm, respectively. These peaks correspond to the protons on the phenyl groups in dichlormate's molecule.
