2,4-Dichloro-1,3-benzoxazole is a heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It is a white powder that is soluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene and toluene. 2,4-Dichloro-1,3-benzoxazole is also used as an inhibitor of enzymes involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes and has been found to be effective against degenerative diseases such as arthritis. This compound can be synthesized through acylation of 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl chloride with sodium carbonate followed by chlorination with phosphorus pentachloride.
