4,4-Di-n-propylcyclohexanone is an anionic lactam that is synthesized by the Birch reduction. It is used in the production of benzoic acid and alkylated benzoic acid. 4,4-Di-n-propylcyclohexanone reacts with benzaldehyde to form 4,4'-diphenylcyclohexanone. This reaction can be catalyzed by acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. The product of this reaction is a mixture of esters including methyl benzoate and ethyl benzoate.
