2,4-Dimethyl-2-pentanol is a dechlorinated solvent that is used to remove chlorine from wastewater. Dehalogenase enzymes in the cell wall of gram negative bacteria catalyze the conversion of 2,4-dimethyl-2-pentanol to acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. The latter product then reacts with water to produce hydrogen peroxide, which can be used for wastewater treatment. 2,4-Dimethyl-2-pentanol has also been shown to react with primary amines such as ammonia and methylamine by an activated or radical chain mechanism and quantified by GC/MS.
