The chemical compound 4,5-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3,6,8-tetranitroanthracene-9,10-dione (DHTNTA) is a disinfectant that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria. DHTNTA is used as an inoculate for the treatment of carrageenan-induced inflammation in animal studies. This chemical also has been shown to be effective against mucosal lesions caused by stomatitis and gingivitis in diabetic patients. In addition to its use as a disinfectant, DHTNTA has been used as a dietary supplement for the treatment of fatigue and weakness in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. Ganoderma lucidum extract containing DHTNTA has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.
