1,8-Dinitronaphthalene is a chemical compound that belongs to the nitroarene family. It is soluble in organic solvents such as cyclohexane and benzene, but insoluble in water. 1,8-Dinitronaphthalene has been used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions and other pollutants in water. The adsorption mechanism involves the formation of strong complexes between the pollutant and 1,8-dinitronaphthalene. The adsorption process is reversible and can be enhanced by adding phosphotungstic acid to the solution. 1,8-Dinitronaphthalene has also been used to study population growth of bacteria since it inhibits bacterial growth through a number of metabolic transformations that include hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase or conjugation with glucuronic acid.
