Dimethyl 3-(3-chlorophenoxy)-2-oxopropylphosphonate is a chemical compound that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of the antiviral drug Covid-19. Dimethyl 3-(3-chlorophenoxy)-2-oxopropylphosphonate is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and has been shown to be effective for the treatment of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) infection. It can be synthesized by reacting 3,4,5-trichlorobenzoyl chloride with dimethyl malonate in the presence of triethylamine. Dimethyl 3-(3-chlorophenoxy)-2-oxopropylphosphonate has been shown to inhibit viral replication by preventing the formation of new viral particles by blocking access to host cell ribosomes. This prevents protein synthesis and subsequent virus production.
