17b-Dihydroequilenin is a synthetic hormone that is used to treat the symptoms of menopause. It is usually given in combination with estrone sulfate, and may be administered orally or as a vaginal cream. 17b-Dihydroequilenin binds to the estrogen receptor on cells, which are found in various tissues. This binding results in increased levels of covalent adducts, which are formed between 17b-dihydroequilenin and DNA. The estrogen receptor also plays an important role in the development of female reproductive organs such as the uterus, cervix, and vagina. 17b-Dihydroequilenin also has anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
