Description

Diethyl 2-acetylsuccinate is a synthetic intermediate that is used as an anti-bacterial agent. It has been shown to have an immunosuppressive effect and can be used to treat HIV/AIDS. Diethyl 2-acetylsuccinate inhibits the growth of bacteria by interfering with their cell wall synthesis. The drug binds to the enzyme acetyltransferase, which is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids, and prevents the formation of acetyl esters. These esters are necessary for the production of phospholipids, which form part of bacterial cell walls. This drug also has antiviral properties and may be useful in treating hepatitis B virus and other viruses that infect humans.
