L-Dopa ethyl ester is a prodrug that is metabolized to the active form, levodopa, in the body. It has been used as a treatment for Parkinson's disease and other diseases caused by insufficient dopamine production. L-Dopa ethyl ester may be used in combination with other drugs such as carbidopa to reduce the side effects of levodopa, such as nausea and vomiting. L-Dopa ethyl ester may also be administered orally or intravenously. The drug binds to dopamine receptors in the brain, where it is converted into levodopa. This conversion process can be inhibited by certain drugs, leading to decreased effectiveness of L-dopa ethyl ester. These drugs include phenothiazines, cimetidine, erythromycin, ketoconazole, and fluoxetine (Prozac).
