Diethyl dimethylmalonate (DDM) is a compound that belongs to the tetracycline group of antibiotics. It is an intermolecular hydrogen-bond donor and has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. DDM has been shown to be synthesized from malonic acid and diethyl methylmalonate in the presence of activated carbon. DDM is also used as a precursor for other compounds, including x-ray contrast media. DDM's fluorescent properties make it useful in analytical chemistry applications such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The IUPAC name for DDM is 2-(2-diethylaminoethoxy)-1,3-propanediol monomethyl ether.
