5,10-Dihydroindeno[2,1-a]indene is a molecule that has been shown to be an efficient electron donor in organic solar cells. It has an electron affinity that is higher than the benzyl group and it can be oxidized irreversibly. 5,10-Dihydroindeno[2,1-a]indene's electronic structure comprises of two aromatic rings with a heteroatom (N) in between them. This heteroatom causes the molecule to have a conformational disorder which means that it cannot adopt a single conformation but rather adopts many conformations due to its flexibility. The molecule's electron affinity and its conformational disorder make it susceptible to oxidation by anion radicals. 5,10-Dihydroindeno[2,1-a]indene is also a good framework for other molecules and organometallic compounds because of its rigid structures.
