Lavendustin is a plant extract that contains a number of compounds, including 5,7-dihydroxy-3-[4-hydroxyphenyl]-8-methoxy-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of human epidermal cells by interfering with the actin cytoskeleton. The anti-inflammatory properties of this compound are due to its ability to block the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IL1β and TNFα. Lavendustin also inhibits the proliferation of hl60 cells in culture, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of DNA and RNA.
Lavendustin also has pharmacokinetic properties that make it suitable for use in animals because it can be absorbed through oral administration and can cross into the brain and spinal cord tissues.
