3-(Dimethylamino)acrylonitrile (DMAN) is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of a variety of chemical products. DMAN has been shown to have hydrogen bonding and nucleobase-like properties. In animals, DMAN can be found in the blood and urine after exposure, but it has not been determined whether this compound is toxic or carcinogenic. DMAN can be synthesized by reacting cyanamide with benzoic acid in an acidic environment at high temperature, forming DMAN and hydrogen cyanide as byproducts.
