6,6-Dimethoxy-2,2-bipyridyl is a ligand that reacts with iron to form a catalyst for hydrogenation reactions. It can be used as a cross-coupling agent for the synthesis of organic molecules. This compound has been shown to have an archetypal structure and methoxy groups on the two rings. The methoxy group on ring A is more reactive than the one on ring B. 6,6-Dimethoxy-2,2-bipyridyl is used to synthesize alkene compounds by reducing the carbonyl group in an alpha position. 6,6-Dimethoxy-2,2-bipyridyl also increases the photostability of photosensitizers used in devices such as lasers and LEDs.
