N-(2,6-Dichlorophenyl)formamide is a crystalline solid that is soluble in water and methanol. It has analgesic properties and can be used as an antioxidant in the treatment of cancer. This compound was first synthesized in 1886 by Emil Fischer. N-(2,6-Dichlorophenyl)formamide crystallizes polymorphically and can exist as three different polymorphs: the alpha form, the beta form, and the gamma form. The alpha form is thermodynamically stable at room temperature and pressure but hydrolyzes readily to release formaldehyde when heated above its melting point. The beta form is thermodynamically unstable at room temperature but hydrolyzes slowly at higher temperatures. The gamma form has a melting point of 141°C and is metastable at room temperature with respect to both the alpha and beta forms.
