A quadrupole mass spectrometer was used to confirm the structure of 2,2-dimethyl-4-pentenal. It has been shown that this chemical can be used to synthesize hirsutene, an enolate, and an oxygenated skeleton. This chemical also reacts with molybdenum to form a cyclopentenone.
