2,4-Dichloro-3-methylphenol is a byproduct of the xylene production process. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and can be used in the production of 2,5-dichlorophenol. In high concentrations, it may cause irritation to skin and eyes. 2,4-Dichloro-3-methylphenol is an aromatic hydrocarbon that reacts with propionate in the presence of aluminium to produce butylphenol. The reaction system involves potassium carbonate, chlorine and hydrocarbons such as benzene and sulfate. The product formed is alkali hydrolysis followed by chlorination to form dichloroethane.
