Dimethyl sulfite is a sulfite that has been used as a solvent in various applications, including the manufacture of polymers and pharmaceuticals. It is also used to prevent oxidation of sulfur-containing compounds in some chemical reactions. This compound is insoluble in water but soluble in polar solvents such as alcohols, ethers, and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Dimethyl sulfite may be prepared by the reaction of methanol with sodium bisulfite, which produces methanethiol and dimethyl sulfate. There are many other methods for synthesizing this compound, but the most common method involves reacting sulfur dioxide with sulfur trioxide followed by hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Dimethyl sulfite can also be produced by reacting ammonia with hydrogen sulfide followed by acidification to produce ammonium bisulfate. The FTIR spectra show that dimethyl sulfite has a C-S stretching frequency at 1743 cm-1 and an
