2,6-Dimethyl-3-hydroxypyridine is a compound that can be used as a model system to study the mechanism of action of carboxylates in neurodegenerative diseases. The compound has been shown to have hepatoprotective properties by increasing glutathione levels in mice and rats. 2,6-Dimethyl-3-hydroxypyridine is also effective at reducing the effects of radiation and peroxide induced oxidative stress. Its mechanism of action may be due to its ability to scavenge hydroxyl radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation. This molecule has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth in kinetic studies, with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 4 mM.
