Product Information

Name:
2,2-Dimethoxyethoxymethylbenzene
Synonyms:
  • 2-Benzyloxy-1,1-dimethoxyethane
  • [(2,2-Dimethoxyethoxy)Methyl]Benzene
Description:

2,2-Dimethoxyethoxymethylbenzene (DMEB) is a widely used chemical intermediate that is used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and other chemicals. It is an ortho-dihydroxy compound that has two methoxy groups on its benzene ring. DMEB can be synthesized by reacting benzyl alcohol with glycerol in the presence of an alkali metal salt. It is also a precursor for dioxolane, which can be obtained by hydrogenolysis of DMEB. DMEB has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on uninfected cells, as well as to inhibit the replication of HIV-1. The conformation of DMEB has been shown to determine its ability to interact with DNA and RNA, which may contribute to its anti-viral activity.
