Trans-5-Decene is a molecule with a chemical formula of C10H20. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature, but it has a high boiling point. The molecule contains 10 carbon atoms and 2 hydrogen atoms. Trans-5-Decene has been shown to be used as an effective catalyst for the conversion of hydrogen fluoride to produce hydrogen gas. This process is used in the manufacture of polyester fibers, polyurethane foams, and plastics. Trans-5-Decene can be synthesized by reacting amines with protonated formaldehyde followed by thermal cracking of the resultant product. Trans-5-decene has also been shown to be useful as an additive for lubricating greases because it reduces the coefficient of friction between two surfaces in contact and lowers their interfacial tension.
