Dibenzyl hydrazine-1,2-dicarboxylate is a tert-butyl compound with a tetrahydro substituent. It can be synthesized by the reaction of benzyl alcohol with sodium halide in an alcohol solvent. The yields are dependent on the type of halide used. Dibenzyl hydrazine-1,2-dicarboxylate can be prepared as a sodium salt or a potassium salt. The potassium salt is preferred because it is less toxic than the sodium salt and has better solubility in water. Dibenzyl hydrazine-1,2-dicarboxylate forms dihydro derivatives when reacted with amines or benzene. Dihydro derivatives of dibenzyl hydrazine-1,2-dicarboxylate have been shown to be effective as anticonvulsants and antipsychotics due to their ability to block dopamine receptors
