Dorzolamide is a sulfonamide that is used to treat chronic hepatitis. It inhibits the synthesis of guanosine monophosphate by competitively binding to soluble guanylate cyclase and preventing the conversion of GTP to GMP. This results in increased levels of intracellular calcium and decreased levels of free calcium, which leads to an inhibition of tumour cell growth and disease activity. Dorzolamide has been shown to be effective in pediatric patients with chronic hepatitis B or C who are not responding well to other treatments. It can also be used as a specific treatment for renal cystic disease, intraocular pressure control in glaucoma, or as adjunctive therapy for the management of heart failure or hypertension. Dorzolamide has no known adverse effects in humans with normal liver function.
