Acetaminophen is a drug that is used to reduce fever and relieve minor aches and pain. It is commonly found in over-the-counter products for the relief of headaches, colds, and other minor aches and pains. Acetaminophen is converted to the active form, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), by the liver enzyme sulfate conjugation. This conversion can be inhibited by drugs that inhibit sulfation, such as erythromycin and cimetidine. Acetaminophen is excreted mainly through the kidneys with a small amount being excreted in bile. The majority of acetaminophen elimination occurs through conjugation with glucuronide or sulfate followed by renal excretion of these metabolites.
