Donepezil is a hydroxy derivative of the cholinesterase inhibitor, donepezil. It has been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and increase the levels of choline in the brain. Donepezil has been used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and Parkinson's disease, but it can also be used for the treatment of other conditions such as schizophrenia and epilepsy. Donepezil is usually administered orally and is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes into 5-O-desmethyl donepezil (5OMD). The 5-O-desmethyl metabolite has been shown to have similar effects on cholinergic neurotransmission as donepezil and was found to be more potent than its parent compound at inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity in vitro. Donepezil has also been shown to have an immobilizing effect on Staphylococcus aureus.
