R-(-)-N-Desmethyl mephenytoin is a metabolite of the drug phenytoin. It is a potent inhibitor of dna repair and has been shown to be toxic to cells in vitro. The toxicity of this metabolite may be due to its ability to inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes and peroxidases, which are involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics. In vivo studies have shown that R-(-)-N-desmethyl mephenytoin is minimally toxic and does not cause teratogenic effects. This metabolite has also been found to suppress suppressor genes, leading to an increased incidence of tumors in CD-1 mice.
