Description

O-Desmethyl mycophenolic acid is an immunosuppressant that is used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. O-Desmethyl mycophenolic acid binds to the enzyme, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and blocks its ability to replicate DNA. This drug has been shown to be effective in the treatment of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in mice and is being investigated as a potential therapy for multiple sclerosis. O-Desmethyl mycophenolic acid has also been shown to have antimicrobial properties against filamentous fungi and may be a useful drug for treating candidiasis.
