Tramadol is a centrally acting analgesic that belongs to the class of opioid drugs. It is used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain and for the relief of postoperative and chronic pain. Tramadol has been shown to be effective in geriatric patients with chronic pain, but also has an effect on concentration-time curves when administered in high doses. Tramadol is metabolized by CYP2D6 into its active form, o-desmethyltramadol (ODMT), which has a longer half-life and greater potency than tramadol. This drug also interacts with other drugs, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and antiarrhythmics.
