Dibromobimane is a chemical compound that has been used as a disinfectant and a water treatment agent. It is used to remove organic matter and bacteria from wastewater. Dibromobimane also binds to DNA, forming covalent bonds with sulfhydryl groups on proteins, which stabilizes the DNA molecule. This mechanism of action is particularly useful in treating autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
