2,3-Dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin is a polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin that is also known as an environmental contaminant. It has been shown to be a transition metal catalyst for the production of hydrogen gas and can also generate fluorescence. It binds to DNA in the form of monoadducts and causes mutations, leading to cancerous growths. 2,3-Dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin is used in the detection of polymorphisms by measuring the fluorescent activity of cells or proteins. The binding affinities are due to hydrogen bonding interactions with hydroxyl groups on cell membranes.
