11,12-Didehydro retinol is an oxidised form of retinol that has been used in the treatment of vitamin A deficiency. It is produced by the oxidation of retinol with tetrahydrofuran and wittig reagents. 11,12-Didehydro retinol is an optical form of vitamin A that can be used to treat night blindness and also as a topical medication for acne. The use of 11,12-didehydro retinol requires a special optical system because it has lower molecular weight than the natural form of vitamin A. This product is an anhydrous substance that contains no water molecules and cannot be dissolved in water without first converting it into a hydrate form. 11,12-Didehydro retinol can be converted into isomeric forms by the addition of ammonium salts or ammonium quaternary salts.
