Diethyl 2-aminomalonate is a small-molecule drug that is an antimicrobial peptide. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the cell membrane and forming holes in it. This peptide has shown to be active against group P2 bacteria, such as zirconium oxide, and also has been shown to have antidiabetic effects. Diethyl 2-aminomalonate can be synthesized in an asymmetric synthesis reaction that uses sodium salts, sodium carbonate, and zinc acetate. The monoclonal antibodies produced by this reaction are able to bind specifically to methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). The reaction solution turns from yellow to brown when it is mixed with dimethyl fumarate.
