Diethylcarbamazine N-oxide (DECN) is a drug used to treat filariasis. It is metabolized in the body to diethylcarbamazine, an antifilarial agent. DECN has been shown to be effective in humans and animals for the treatment of filariasis. The effects are believed to be due to its ability to inhibit microfilariae from developing into adults by blocking their development through the inhibition of piperazine synthesis and metabolism. DECN can be administered orally or topically, but it is more effective when given orally. DECN can also be detected in urine samples, which may aid in diagnosis and treatment monitoring of patients with filariasis.
