2,3-Dihydrobenzofuran-5-carboxaldehyde (DBF) is an aldehyde that has been synthesised with high resistance to the mitochondria. DBF inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and induces necrotic cell death in staphylococcus. Mitochondrial membrane potential is essential for the production of ATP by oxidative phosphorylation and is crucial for bacterial growth. DBF has inhibitory effects on P. aeruginosa and chalcones have also shown antimycobacterial activity.
