5-(2,5-Dihydroxybenzylamino)-2-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) is a natural product that has been identified as an inhibitor of bacterial growth. HBA inhibits the angiogenic process by blocking the formation of collagen, which is essential for the development of new blood vessels. This compound also blocks the production of inflammatory mediators in human serum and reduces chronic arthritis symptoms in mice. HBA is a structural analogue of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and may be synthesized from this precursor molecule by glutathione reductase. X-ray crystal structures have been obtained for a complex between HBA and lavendustin, which is an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of collagen.
