3,5-Diiodo-4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid is a diphenyl ether that is used in the production of pharmaceuticals. 3,5-Diiodo-4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid has been shown to be an inhibitor of monoiodotyrosine formation in human serum by photooxidation of 3,5-diiodothyroacetic acid. It also inhibits the biosynthesis of methionine and lysine. The molecule can be synthesized from iodination reactions or by the reaction of an amino acid with sodium hypochlorite.
