5,6-Dimethoxyindole is a proton sponge that absorbs protons and prevents them from reacting with other molecules. This compound has been used in the synthesis of ferrocene and dimethoxybenzaldehyde. 5,6-Dimethoxyindole is a hydrogenated form of the indole ring system. The optimal reaction conditions for 5,6-dimethoxyindole are pH 7.0 at 25°C. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This compound also has anticancer activity and has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth by alkylating DNA or by reacting with amide groups on proteins to form adducts of DNA or protein.
