The compound's structure consists of intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl oxygen atom and the hydroxyl on the adjacent ring. 3,4-Dimethyl-5-pyrazolone undergoes intramolecular hydrogen bond fragmentation in mass spectroscopy. Fragmentation patterns are unique to each individual compound and can be used to identify it as well as differentiate it from other compounds.
