1,2-Dimethylpiperazine is a covalent inhibitor that binds to the active site of bacterial enzymes. It has been shown to be effective against cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. 1,2-Dimethylpiperazine also inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting their cell division and protein synthesis. This drug has been shown to be successful as an anticancer agent when used with l-tartaric acid (an organic solvent) and hydrogen bond additives. It is currently being investigated for its use as a treatment for symptoms associated with psychotic disorders.
